Match report from the mixed tournament held on 19 May

On Saturday, 19th May 2012, Brentwood Handball Club hosted the second BHC Tournament for Mixed Teams. As last year, Bristol Handball Club and Thames Handball Club made their way to the Brentwood Centre and participated in what proves to become a popular opportunity for female and male players to play on the same team and having the joint fun of playing competitive handball matches. With each team playing 2 legs, all players were provided ample opportunity to get into action in each of the 4 matches they played.

It was a most enjoyable day and the few spectators could watch good and exciting matches paired with fantastic individual and team performances. Last year's cup winner, Thames HC, were contested by Bristol HC who featured a strong and very competitive team. The neck and neck race saw the two teams beat each other in their two matches. In the end, only the goal difference of 9 goals told the winner Thames HC from Bristol HC who came in second.

Like last year, BHC staged new players in the tournament with Amy Dodd and Chris Littlejohn debuting on the team thus playing competitive matches for their first time. The 'newcomers' integrated themselves very well and Chris Littlejohn surprised not only his team mates with the 10 goals he scored over the four matches and becoming the second goal scorer after Chris Baker - BHC's top scorer of the tournament - who scored 13 goals. Amy Dodd also played to her strengths in her debut and kept up a good defence work. As she said after the tournament: "The team performed better and better throughout the tournament and found their way into the game. I really enjoyed playing." This is really great news considering that both players stood their ground against far more experienced players and goalkeepers.

The Club's Acting Chair, experienced Norwegian player Mona Vaeremans, also joined in this time and played her first competitive matches on the BHC mixed team. She visibly very much enjoyed playing in the tournament and contributed to the team's tally by netting in one goal. Her great play and tireless attempts to create chances were very much appreciated and the mixed team hopes to see more of it in the future.

Although BHC came in 3rd place, the team did quite well taking into account that only 2 subs were available on the day and also the fact that this particular formation had not played together before. Despite this, the team displayed a couple of very swift moves, good defence work and well executed fast breaks - a solid platform to build on and keep improving further, as coach Hans-Jörg said.

The BHC players on the day were: Mark Cory (goalkeeper), Chris Baker (13 goals), Richard Campbell (2 goals), Amy Dodd, Chris Littlejohn (10 goals), Mona Vaeremans (1 goal), Terry Ward (1 goal), Stephanie Wardow (1 goal) and Ian Weir (3 goals). Chris Baker stood in as captain for Philippe Kouessan-Ettori who was still recovering from injury.
