For this game Brentwood had their strongest squad of the season with David Hendrick in goal, and court players Danny Sedano, Mark Cory, Terry Ward, Ian Weir, Chris “Boris” Pini, Rob Grant, George Thorpe, Chris Baker and Duncan Whitfield. Brentwood also had 2 players making their league debut – Stewart Henderson and Richard Campbell.

With the game starting 10 minutes ahead of the scheduled start time, Brentwood were unable to complete their regular warm up and were quickly behind 5-0 and this despite Dave Hendrick making a great save at the start of the game. Brentwood then made a mini comeback with Rob scoring the opening goal for Brentwood, and Chris Baker scoring 2 goals to make the score 5-3 to the Blades. The Blades responded though scoring 6 goals to only 2 in reply from Brentwood to make the score 11-5 to the Blades mid way through the first half. Then end of the first half saw the Blades score 6 further goals with 3 in reply from Brentwood (2 from Duncan and another goal for Chris) to leave the score at half time 17-8 to Essex University.

The second half saw the experience of the Blades team score a further 10 goals with only 3 in reply from Brentwood to extend their lead to 11-27 mid way through the second half. The half finished with the Blades scoring 6 more goals to Brentwood’s 2 goals to make the final score 13-33 to the Essex Blades.

Despite the loss there were some positives to take from the game. There were a couple of well executed fast breaks between Dave Hendrick in goal and Chris Baker which resulted in goals. Richard scored on his debut with his only shot of the game to give him a 100% shooting percentage. Top scorer in the game was Chris Baker with 6 out of the 13 Brentwood goals, with Rob (3 goals), Duncan (2 goals) and Ian and Richard also on the score sheet.

This was Brentwood’s last game of the Development league season and they finished with no wins from their 6 games. However, the games this season have been against teams comprised largely of foreign students with a lot of handball experience and this season Brentwood have had players making their handball debut in most of the games.

The future, however, looks promising as the club is continuing to grow and the newcomers will all have time to develop their potential before next season starts.

There are a couple of special mentions for players this season. Firstly, to Mark Cory who played in every league game either as a court player or in goal. Secondly, to Boris “The Everyman Olympian” who also played in every game and completed his Olympic handball challenge and the club hopes he continues on with the team for many years.

A special thanks also goes to Lena who has kept the team stats for each match this season which provide the coach with a great insight into the teams development.

The next matches for Brentwood Handball Club will be the Brentwood Tournament for Mixed Teams on Saturday, 26th May 2012, in the Brentwood Centre.

This was the first opportunity for the female players of BHC to play competitive games since the Brentwood mixed tournament in summer 2011, and saw Jo Grant, Stephanie Wardow and Julia Mengin join men's development league players Mark Cory, Terry Ward, Ian Weir, Boris Pini, Sean Briscomb, Rob Grant and Duncan Whitfield.

Brentwood's first game was against Cardiff and Brentwood started the game strongly scoring 5 goals without reply at the start of the match. Cardiff then scored their first goal and the middle 10 minutes of the first half then saw both teams scoring 8 goals to make the score 13-8 to Brentwood. At the end of the half Brentwood increased their lead scoring 4 goals to Cardiff's 2 goals, making the score 17-10 to Brentwood at half time. The second half saw the experience of Brentwood increase their lead further scoring 13 goals to only 4 in reply by Cardiff making the final score 30-14 to Brentwood to give them their first win of the season.

Everyone played really well in this game with top scorers in the match against Cardiff being Rob with 8 goals and Ian and Julia with 6 goals each. Player of the game though, was Jo Cory in goal who saved 17 out of 30 shots on target and even saved a penalty.

After a very short break Brentwood were back in action against a very experienced Thames team. This experience soon saw Thames take an early 3-0 lead which they then extended to a 10-1 lead mid way through the first half. Thames with their large squad then used the fresh legs on the bench to their advantage to extend their lead to 18-6 at half time. The second half saw Brentwood put up a great fight back scoring 9 goals (3 more than in the first half) but once again the experience and large squad of Thames saw them score another 18 goals to make the final score 36-15 to Thames.

Top goal scorers in this game were Duncan with 5 goals and Julia and Rob with 4 goals each. Once again the goalkeepers played well with Jo saving 8 out of 26 shots in the first half and Mark Cory saving 13 out of 31 shots in the second half.

Following this game Thames took on and beat Cardiff in the last game of the day, refereed by Brentwood coach Hans-Jörg Küller Rabaça, which meant Brentwood finished the tournament in 2nd place.

The tournament was great fun for all players and all our players played really well in particular the ladies on the team Jo, Stephanie and Julia who played 2 games back to back with practically no break in between. Jo was excellent in goal saving nearly 50% of the shots on goal including a penalty, Stephanie scored 1 goal and was very good in defence, and Julia used her skill and experience to score 10 goals over the 2 games.

Top goal scorer over the 2 games was Rob with 12 goals. Also on the score sheet was Boris, The Everyman Olympian, who scored his first goal for the club from the penalty spot.

The Brentwood Handball team now has one final league match to play on Saturday, 11th February, at their home ground in the Brentwood Centre and hopefully more tournaments for mixed teams to look forward to over the next few months.
